Abel-Moody 230kV transmission project

In April 2008, SRP and its consultant, Transcon Environmental, began the siting study for the proposed Abel-Moody 230kV Transmission Project.

To meet increased electricity demand and growth, SRP plans to construct an approximately 20-mile, double-circuit, 230-kilovolt (kV) transmission line connecting two SRP-owned and previously sited 230/69kV substations. The new transmission line also will connect a new 230/69kV substation that will be sited and built as part of this project.Click to see a map of the Abel-Moody 230kV project

Project need

Existing electrical transmission facilities serving SRP's developing southeast service area, including Queen Creek, Gilbert, southeast Mesa and nearby unincorporated communities, need additional infrastructure to keep pace with current and future electricity demand. The new transmission line has two primary purposes:

  • Provide additional power that, according to projected development plans, will be required in the near future
  • Increase the reliability and performance of the local high-voltage system

Public outreach

In June 2008, approximately 39,600 newsletters were mailed to landowners, agencies, organizations, business owners and residents in the study area to introduce the project. Click to see a map of the Abel-Moody 230kV project route alternatives

SRP held two public meetings on June 24-25 and met with local jurisdictional working groups in order to seek comments and identify potential route alignments.

The route alternatives that have been developed reflect the input received on the project to date.

Siting study

After the next series of public meetings, scheduled for August 25-27, SRP expects to narrow the route alternatives using public input and the criteria developed through the siting study. Route evaluation includes consideration of potential line operation issues, potential environmental effects of the route, current and anticipated land uses, and aesthetic impact of the transmission line.

Environmental analysis

As part of the siting study, an environmental analysis will be conducted to evaluate the final route alternatives that will be presented to the Arizona Corporation Commission. This analysis, which examines effects to natural and cultural resources and land uses to assess the compatibility of the proposed line with the environment, will be included in the application to the Arizona Power Plant and Transmission Line Siting Committee for a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility (CEC).

Project timeline

The CEC application to the Arizona Corporation Commission is expected to be submitted in November 2008.

The project in-service date is scheduled for summer 2012.
